A private register · Canada

An emotional support animal certificate for your pet, and a card that fits in your wallet.

Their name, their photo and a register reference you can check, on a certificate made to be framed and a register card at true bank-card size. Both arrive by email within a minute. $35 USD, current for 18 months, and nothing that renews by itself.

Services and fees

A private register. Not a government scheme, and not a legal document. Prices in US dollars; any sales tax is calculated by Creem and shown at checkout. Available everywhere in Canada except Quebec, for now.

What the record is

What you get for $35

  • Puts your pet’s details, photo and a checkable number on one tidy card and certificate.

  • Gives you something to show when someone asks about your pet, instead of scrolling for photos.

  • Stays checkable at a public web address for 18 months, with nothing charged automatically and no card kept on file.

The term

What an emotional support animal is

A pet whose presence helps someone feel better. No task training is required, because being there is the point. It describes a relationship, not a status, and the register records that relationship with a photograph, a name and a number.

Cats, dogs, rabbits, birds: the register takes any animal that lives with you.

What the term means, and what it is worth in Canada

How it works

Two minutes, start to finish

  1. Tell us about your pet

Name, type, breed and date of birth, and a photo if you have one to hand. Without one, both documents say no photograph was supplied.

  2. See it before you pay

Your card and certificate are drawn on screen with your pet on them. Only then is there anything to pay.

  3. It arrives in a minute

Two PDFs by email, or four with the landlord letter: a register card at true bank-card size, and a certificate to frame. Both carry the date the entry runs to, printed rather than buried.

Other registries sell yearly plans, 12-month letters and one-off “lifetime” registrations, at prices from under $40 to over $200. We have not found a like-for-like figure we could print without guessing, so these are our own numbers only, in US dollars.

Status and limitations

What it does not do

Every registry in this market knows all of that. We put it on the homepage instead of the small print. You can decide what that is worth.

  1. It does not create any legal right to keep a pet, anywhere.
  2. It does not oblige a landlord, airline, shop or hotel to accept your animal.
  3. It is not a medical document, and we ask you no health questions to produce it.
  4. It is not issued or recognised by any government body, because no such register exists.

Where the weight actually sits

In the United States, the letter is the law. In Canada, your province’s tenancy law is.

Whether you can keep a pet in a rental in Canada is not settled by any certificate or letter. It is settled by the tenancy law of your province, the lease you sign, and any condo or strata rules for the building. Each province draws the line differently: in Ontario a “no pets” clause in a lease is void, while in most other provinces a landlord may refuse pets outright. Where a disability is involved, human rights law can require a landlord to accommodate a genuine need, and that turns on the need, not on a registry. We do not sell medical letters.

The rules, province by province

Free to read. Nothing to buy.

What helps with a landlord is a clear written request. You can write it yourself from our free template, or we write it from your answers, for the province the rental is in: $35 on its own, or $55 with the certificate. The template is the same kind of letter.

The letter we write for you

At a glance

Ontario
A “no pets” clause in a lease is void once you are a tenant, but a landlord can still turn down an applicant with a pet, and cannot take a pet deposit.
British Columbia
A landlord can refuse or limit pets, and if pets are allowed can take one pet damage deposit of up to half a month’s rent.
Alberta
A landlord can refuse pets, and a refundable pet deposit counts towards the one-month cap on deposits, though a non-refundable pet fee sits outside it.
Manitoba
A landlord can refuse pets, and if pets are allowed can take one pet damage deposit of up to a month’s rent on top of the security deposit.
Nova Scotia
A landlord can refuse pets but cannot take a separate pet deposit: everything beyond rent counts towards the half-month cap on the security deposit.

Questions, answered plainly

The awkward ones first

Is this a legal document?

No. It creates no rights and obliges nobody to accept your pet. If a registry tells you otherwise, that is the moment to close the tab.

Will this make my landlord accept my dog?
No. A landlord is not bound by any certificate, ours or anyone else’s. What decides it is your province’s tenancy law, your lease and any condo or strata rules. In Ontario, a “no pets” clause in a lease is void, although a landlord can still choose a tenant without pets; elsewhere a landlord can usually say no. What helps is a clear written request that answers a landlord’s worries before they ask. We write one from your answers, $35 on its own or $55 with the certificate, and our free template does the same job if you would rather write it yourself.
Where disability comes in

Human rights law in every province protects people with disabilities, and a landlord may have to accommodate a disability-related need for an animal up to the point of undue hardship. That depends on the person’s need and the evidence for it, not on a registration, and it is a question for a human rights body or a lawyer, not for us.

Do emotional support animals have legal status in Canada?

Not as such. No government in Canada registers emotional support animals, and no law gives them the standing of guide dogs or service dogs, which some provinces certify under their own statutes. This register is not part of any of those schemes.

Will you bill me again?

Not without you deciding to. An entry is current for 18 months, which is six months longer than the plans that bill every twelve, and the date it ends is printed on the card. When it passes, nothing is charged and nothing happens: there is no subscription and no card of yours on file. Making a new entry afterwards is a fresh purchase, at whatever it costs then, and entirely your call.

What if I change my mind?

Before you pay, nothing is committed and you can close the tab. Once your documents are delivered the purchase is final, because you keep them, and we say so beside the price. We do not refund a change of mind. If something is faulty or not as described, we put it right or refund you. Any refund that is ever made marks the registration inactive, because the credential should always tell the truth.

Can I buy from anywhere in Canada?

From every province and territory except Quebec, for now. Selling there brings French-language and privacy-law duties we are not set up for yet, so rather than sell badly we do not sell there at all. Prices are in US dollars, and any sales tax is calculated by Creem from where you are and shown at checkout before you pay.

Do you ask about my mental health?

No, and we never will. We ask no health questions and hold no health data of any kind. Nothing about your circumstances is any of our business.
